The Aiken-Rhett House

Built in 1818 with extensive subsequent renovations and additions through the 1830s and 1850s, the Aiken-Rhett house at 48 Elizabeth Street is the crown jewel of Historic Charleston Foundation's properties. It remains largely unaltered since the final renovation in 1858 following the Aiken's return from a two year Grand Tour throughout Europe. These haunting photos, 6 of 81, come from the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS).

    I love this house! Although I have never been to Charleston I have been following the Aiken-Rhett house since the early 1990's. I would love to lived in a Grand home like this that has been layered over the years with the best Antebellum furniture and decorative arts! In this months Southern Loving magazine they show a fashion photo in the ballroom of this mansion.

    My friend John Pope helped style that shoot with antiques from his shop on King St. There are a lot of amazing homes, but the Aiken-Rhett is by far the best.

    Thanks for that tidbit! I will have to go back and look over it. For some reason they sent me two copy's of this issue. The first article I have about this house is from Preservation magazine dating from the early 1990's.
