John Tackett over at The Devoted Classicist sent me this image of the Vanderbilt Drawing Room on 5th Avenue which shows the chairs from my previous post in situ.
The garnet studded onyx columns seen above the chair are now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
JWC, sorry that this image, framed under glass and hanging on the wall, is not better. But context means a lot, doesn't it?

ReplyDeleteAlthough the columns (and other details) tend to get lost in that wonderful picture, it also shows how the individually ornate and well-designed objects combine to from an incredibly rich effect.

Agree with Parnassus, the layering is beautiful. I've noticed rooms that take my breath away are often comprised of invididual components that are stunning in their own right. Like a beautiful violinist, add them to an orchestra and it is nothing short of amazing. And anything bedazzled is good by me, just kidding! :)
