Romaine Brooks

I recently saw some of Romaine Brooks' paintings in the Renwick Gallery in D.C. and fell in love... here are some favorites...

Self Portrait, 1923

Jean Cocteau, 1912

Peter, a Young English Girl, 1924

Ida Rubinstein, 1918

The Baroness

Romaine Brooks with some of her paintings, circa 1960.

  1. Such an interesting figure -just one of many that carried on in that era. There is a biography coming about her in 2011-I think. Romaine Brooks and her Circle.

  2. Thank you for letting me know- I'll definitely have to check that out. Her paintings are fascinating.

  3. I had not heard of this artist, but I am grateful for the introduction. Thanks for stopping by.

  4. Hello William:
Aren't they just wonderful?! And all the subjects so very, very stylish as, we think, was she. How we should love this exhibition. Lucky you!

  5. I always go crazy for art from the Interwar years, but she especially makes me wild! I love all the grays she would use. I think her portrait of Gluck, "Peter a Young English Girl" is my favorite.
